Hey Schmoeville!
Robert Downey Jr. has been pretty coy with his future plans with Marvel when his contract is up for awhile now folks. Will there be an Iron Man 4 or won’t there? A few days ago even, RDJ made a joke and said he would only be in the film if Mel Gibson directed it, which is a pretty slim chance of actually happening. But I think the biggest question running through my mind right now in regards to RDJ’s future in the MCU, is I wonder if Marvel and RDJ are even sure of what the actor’s plans are right now? Every time the two sides are asked about it, they answer with political and predictable responses, so we don’t really know what the studio’s plan is with the character in the coming films following Avengers: Age of Ultron.
And during his appearance on The Ellen Show today, RDJ was asked about Iron Man 4 and the actor responded with the following:
I don’t know, people are saying that this is officially confirming we’re getting an Iron Man 4, but I don’t really buy it. This reminds me a lot of what Tom Hanks said when he was asked if Pixar was making Toy Story 4 all those years ago like, “Oh yeah, they’re working on it.” He doesn’t really actually confirm anything in this clip, but it also makes it seem a lot more likely we’re getting it, that’s for sure.
Also, while doing a Reddit AMA today, RDJ was asked about the comment about Gibson directing IM4. Check out what the actor had to say below!
“It was an offhanded remark to a journalist and friend. I have other projects in mind for Mel and I – sooner than later the Marvel Roster will be made public and all questions will be answered.”
So does this mean that the Marvel Slate for their future films is finally going to be announced soon? And is Iron Man 4 going to be one of the few remaining mystery films? It certainly sounds like it. Which I’m all for. Granted, I wasn’t a huge fan of the last two Iron Man films, but man, the first one is still one of the best superhero films of all time. I hope if they do make a fourth one, they finally touch on some of Tony’s alcoholism and possibly some anger following the failure that will end up being his choice to make Ultron.
The last cool little tidbit that happened during the AMA was when the actor was asked if he could guest star or be in any TV show, what would it be? Unsurprisingly, he said Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but also prefaced it with saying how unlikely it really is:
“Nothing is impossible. But there might be a fair amount of red tape involved in something like that. I love Clark Gregg, and am pleased the show is doing so well.”
Yeah, I don’t see that one happening anytime soon. Although if RDJ guest starred in an episode of the show, that might actually convince me to check it out again. Who knows? Stranger things have happened that’s for sure.
Overall, it’s just a lot of cool tidbits and comments made by the actor regarding the MCU and his place in it. I really do hope we get Iron Man 4, and his comments do mean Marvel is going to be revealing their slate of films sometime soon. Fingers crossed!
So what do YOU think Schmoeville? Would you want a fourth film in the franchise? Would you not? Do you want anyone else to play the character? What do you think of Iron Man possibly going on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.!
