Hello Schmoeville!
Welcome to another edition of Water Cooler Wednesday, your weekly stop for the most interesting bits of news to drop over the last week. Yes, it’s been a few weeks since our last WCW post, but that’s because I was in beautiful, sunny San Diego for the last couple of weeks. And, yes, I was there for my first ever Comic-Con experience, but that’s a post for another day…
So, without further ado, here are the news bits that had the interwebz buzzing:
Channing Tatum Set To Don Flippers For Iconic, Rom-Com Remake

That noise you heard earlier this week was the collective groan of an entire generation of folks asking, ‘Why, God, why?” when Disney announced that they would be remaking the 1984 Ron Howard classic, Splash. And, because it’s now 2016, and we’re all about switching things up and gender bending pretty much everything we can, the role of mermaid, Madison, will of course be played by a man. But, not just any man; Magic Mike himself, Channing Tatum. He will star with Jillian Bell in the remake.
While I have no problem seeing Tatum and his abs swimming around on the big screen, I’m not sure that this is a good idea. This isn’t a film that movie goers are clamoring to be remade, and although I have no problem with gender-swapping iconic roles in order to bring something new to the table (for the record, I actually like the Ghostbusters remake), this was Tom Hanks’ first starring role. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill, and no matter what happens, it’s never going to live up to the original. But, Hollywood is always looking for lightning to strike twice, and is banking on the built in recognition to make a difference.
We Got Our First Look At Matt Damon Defending The Great Wall
The first trailer for director Zhang Yimou’s first English language film, The Great Wall, dropped this past week. Starring Matt Damon, Jing Tian, Willem Dafoe, Andy Lau and Pedro Pascal, the film tells the story of an elite fighting force defending the Great Wall against a formidable foe. It is also the largest film to ever be shot entirely in China.
So, I remember hearing something about this film last year, but to be honest, it completely fell off my radar. I don’t think I was the only one, as it seemed that this trailer kind of came out of nowhere and surprised a lot of folks. It’s… interesting, to say the least. Yimou makes visually interesting films, and this one looks to be no different. Given its February release date, Universal isn’t expecting a big hit here in North America, but you can bet their hoping for spectacular numbers overseas. Hollywood has really taken notice of China’s box office power, and are now beginning to create products to entice audiences outside of the North American market.

Well, so much for Part I and Part II! After DC and Warner Bros. announced that their team up films will no longer be called Justice League Part I and Part II, (for the record, the first film will be titled simply Justice League, the second title hasn’t been released yet) Marvel has followed suit and decided that it’s upcoming Avengers flicks will no longer be two parts of a whole.
Marvel and Disney officially announced the change, (even though the Russo brothers hinted at it a couple of months ago), stating that the first film will now simply be entitled, Avengers: Infinity War. The second film is currently being called ‘Untitled Avengers,’ meaning one of two things; either the studio has yet to come up with a catchy title, or the title they have in mind may contain some sort of spoilery goodness, probably to do with the first film. The change comes because, according to the Russo brothers, the films are vastly different from one another. The release dates of May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019, respectively, have not changed. There are plenty of Marvel flicks to keep us entertained in the meantime, however. The next up is this November’s Doctor Strange.
So, Schmoeville, that’s it for this week’s Water Cooler Wednesday. What are your thoughts on these little bits of goodness? There is plenty of other interesting and buzz-worthy news that hit the web this week. What would you like to talk about? Comment below and let’s chat!
