Hey Schmoeville!
One thing the Marvel Universe has been based on is the crossover of different characters into multiple films. With Iron Man and Spider-Man (rumored) set to appear in Captain America: Civil War, the future is wide open for the universe to tie into future installments.
Despite not having any films in Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while speaking with Empire, Mark Ruffalo recently talked about the future of the Hulk in the MCU and the possibility of anymore standalone films for the character:
“Who knows where these things will go, but as Bruce is able to impress his will on the Hulk – going into The Hulk and being inside the Hulk when he’s raging – The Hulk’s will is also growing and able to impress upon Bruce… It’ll be interesting to see if that ends up being what would be the next Hulk movie.”
“[A new feature-length Hulk movie is] a tough nut to crack. Traditionally you’re watching a guy who doesn’t want to do the very thing that you want him to do. It’s hard to take for two hours. I don’t know how many times you can use that same framing for it, but now he’s maturing and there’s a cool dynamic growing between Banner and The Hulk.”
Ever since his debut in The Avengers, Marvel fans have been clamoring for a standalone Hulk film with Ruffalo. Though I really loved how Ruffalo portrayed the character, I’m not sure how a standalone Hulk film would fit into the universe. I really liked 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, but it’s difficult to crack a Hulk film that would actually work. The escalation of threats that feature in Marvel’s sequels would be difficult to crack with the character, and any film would require a much more personal struggle.
One of the things that could really work is introducing the character into a future Marvel film, such as Iron Man’s appearance in Captain America: Civil War. Though it would be hard to introduce Hulk into any future origin stories, it would be interesting to introduce Ruffalo into the cosmic universe, such as Thor: Ragnorak or Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Unlike other characters, Hulk works primarily as a supporting character, and can be used as such in either film.
